Wildcats ‘did not seek cut’

Early Super League leaders Wakefield say they were not one of the clubs wanting to reduce the 14-team competition to 12.

The reduction was discussed at a meeting of clubs on Monday, but the Trinity chairman, Ted Richardson, issued a statement denying suggestions that they were one of three arguing unsuccessfully for the contraction.

Meanwhile, the Wildcats are determined to maintain the momentum that has seen them win their first two games. They have taken precautions to make sure that Sunday's game against reigning champions Leeds will go ahead despite the return of the cold weather by covering the section of the Belle Vue pitch that is in the shade. Brett Delaney, the Rhinos' new Australian centre, is likely to miss the match after picking up an injury in the defeat by Castleford.

Josh Hodgson, signed by Hull KR from Hull this winter, will make his Super League debut at Wigan tomorrow night, in place of the injured Mike Ratu.

Ryan Esders has won his appeal against a one-match ban. The young Welsh full-back is in line for his first appearance of the season for Crusaders at Salford tomorrow in place of injured Tommy Lee. But London Skolars' Liam Prescott has been suspended for four matches for gouging.
