Britain’s defending world match racing champion slipped to third in the 2013 standings after losing the sudden death third place playoff in the Korea Cup to New Zealand’s Adam Minoprio.

Williams and his Team GAC Pindar had stormed through the round robin, losing only one match out of 11 against the rest of the field. Bhe stumbled in his semi-final against the eventual winner, Mathieu Richard of France.

He then managed to establish a lead over Minoprio in the play-off only to relinquish the favoured side of the course in the dash for the finish.

Said a clearly surprised Minoprio: ”We wanted to get closer to the finish boat and, fortunately, he let us. It was a case of each of us trying to give each other the win; luckily for us he gave it to us at the last cross.”

Richard, Minoprio and Williams occupy the top three places as the Alpari World Match Racing Tour moves to Marstrand, Sweden, next month to complete the first half of the 2013 tour. The remaining three events are Chicago in August, Bermuda in October and the double points finale in Malaysia in December.
