Steve Parry gained revenge for his Commonwealth Games defeat by claiming the 200m butterfly gold ahead of the home favourite Justin Norris in the fourth round of the World Cup in Melbourne.

Parry, who had to settle for silver in Manchester, won in a personal best time of 1min 53.71sec, almost three seconds ahead of Norris, with Australia's Shane Fielding third.

It was not just the senior members of the British squad of 15 who enjoyed success in what, for many, is their first full international meet. Keri Anne Payne and Stephanie Proud, both only 14, also took golds in their respective events and set British junior records.

Payne broke one of the longest standing records, that of Sarah Hardcastle dating back to 1984, when she took gold in the 800m freestyle in a best time of 8min 23.58sec to demolish the previous standard of 8min 27.31sec. Proud took top honours in the 200m backstroke in a time of 2min 08.00sec, knocking over two seconds off the previous British junior record.
