Wakefield enter market for Robinson

Wakefield Trinity have launched an audacious bid to sign the Wigan and Great Britain winger, Jason Robinson. The Leeds-born player, whose contract expires this year, is a target for the Rugby Football Union, but ambitious Wakefield hope to provide him with an alternative if he cannot agree terms with Wigan.

"Jason has already received a formal offer from rugby union and we believe like all rugby league fans that it would be a very sad day for the game to lose the services of such a high profile, quality player," said Trinity's chief executive, John Pearman.

"We have opened negotiations with Jason's agent and, although we realise we will face tough competition, we will be doing our utmost to get Jason's signature."

For tomorrow's game at St Helen's, Trinity have Willie Poaching back against opposition again without the injured Darrell Trindall.

Hull, the club hoping to avoid being thrown out of future Challenge cups next week, have given a second chance to Steve Craven. He was squeezed out by the merger with Gateshead this winter and has been driving a taxi in York. The departure of Rob Roberts for Halifax has enabled Hull to fit him into their squad and their chief executive, Shane Richardson, said: "We are delighted to welcome him back. He's a really tough forward and a big favourite with the fans."

Craven will not be involved at Warrington tomorrow night, although Adam Maher and Mick Jenkins could return to bolster a pack that could be without Paul Broadbent, Craig Wilson and David Maiden.

The League is expected to announce on Monday when it will rule on the crowd trouble when Hull lost to Leeds in the Challenge Cup semi-final last Sunday.

There will be two notable debuts tomorrow - the Australian centre Jason Nicol, for Salford against Wigan, and David Bradbury, the Great Britain forward, for Huddersfield-Sheffield against Bradford, who draft in Tevita Vaikona and David Boyle. Aaron Raper will be missing for Castleford against London Broncos, for whom Tulsen Tollett becomes one of the select few to reach 100 appearances.

In the Northern Ford Premiership, Leigh's coach, Paul Terzis, will take charge of the league leaders for the first time. Like Leigh, visitors Featherstone are on an eight game winning run.
