WWE has been forced to suspend one of its top stars after allegations he raped a woman in a hotel room.

Enzo Amore, real name Eric Arndt, is the company’s current cruiserweight champion, and has been no stranger to controversy in recent months.

But matters took an extremely serious turn after tweets surfaced from a woman on Twitter claiming she had been sexually assaulted by the star in a hotel room in California last October.

The 31-year-old has been immediately suspended by the company, just hours before he was due to appear on a marquee wrestling broadcast in New York. It will also shelve plans for the former NXT star to appear at the Royal Rumble pay-per-view this weekend.

Police have since confirmed they are investigating, adding that: “…on Monday, October 23rd, 2017, at around 2:30 p.m., Phoenix Police responded to a local hospital for a call of a sexual assault that had reportedly occurred on October 19th, 2017 at 401 West Clarendon Avenue."

The woman, who has not been named, Tweeted: "OKAY… it’s been long enough & I have been so so scared to share this. I was raped in mid-October by the WWE Enzo Amore (also known as Eric Arden) & Tyler Grosso & TOOPOOR let it happen as accomplices. I was in a mental hospital for 45 days after it. They ARE NOT good people."

Neither Arndt nor WWE have specifically commented on the incident.

A WWE statement said: "WWE has zero tolerance for matters involving sexual harassment or sexual assault. Until this matter is resolved, Eric Arndt (aka Enzo Amore) has been suspended."
