Marcelo Rios, the No 3 seed from Chile, was upset by Germany's Marc Goellner in the second round of the Mercedes Cup in Stuttgart yesterday.

Rios, tipped as a future world No 1, was beaten 6-0, 7-6 by the German Davis Cup player who opened with an ace and kept the same tempo through the first set, which lasted only 18 minutes.

Rios, ranked No 11 in the world, had his service broken three times in a row, and the 111th-ranked Goellner took advantage of his opponent's numerous errors.

The Chilean rallied in the second set but Goellner, who represents his country at the Olympics, used his strong serve to finish off his opponent in little more than an hour.
