Tiger Woods, who made a spectacular transition from amateur status to the US PGA Tour, has been named Sportsman of the Year by the American weekly magazine Sports Illustrated.

Diana Critchley, the former British women's amateur champion, has died, aged 85. She won the British title in 1930, was twice English champion and played in the Curtis Cup in 1932 and 1934, also acting as non-playing captain in 1950.
