Sam Torrance was disqualified from the Oki Pro-Am in Madrid yesterday when he overslept and missed his tee-off time. Andrew Sherborne, whose only two European Tour victories were in the Spanish capital, shot a five- under-par 67 to finish the first round joint second with Miguel Martin, of Spain, and two shots behind the Spanish leader, Pedro Linhart.

Australian Robert Allenby, who fractured his sternum in a car crash in Spain 12 days ago, is set to appear at the Volvo Masters in two weeks' time - possibly to hit just one shot with his putter. Allenby, third in the European Order of Merit, has been told that to collect a bonus which could amount to pounds 73,000 he must tee off in the final event of the season.
