Jim Colbert yesterday became the first three-time winner on the US senior tour this year, shooting a three-under 69 to win the PGA Nationwide Championship at Alpharetta, Georgia, by three strokes.

Phil Mickelson, of the United States, interrupted a five week holiday long enough to achieve a two-stroke win in the GTE Byron Nelson Classic at Irving, Texas, his eighth PGA Tour victory. Mickelson demonstrated his renowned short game when he chipped in from 30 feet for an eagle at the par-five 16th on his way to a closing four-under-par 66, which gave him a total of 265.
