John Cook and Phil Mickelson were tied for the lead after the completion of the rain-interrupted second round of the Mercedes Championship at Carlsbad, California. The two Americans were nine-under-par at 135, one stroke ahead of Zimbabwe's Nick Price and New Zealand's Frank Nobilo, and two shots better than Sweden's Gabriel Hjertsted. The South African Ernie Els was on 138, while Tiger Woods was four strokes off the pace. Nick Faldo was 11 shots off the pace after a 75.
