Golf: Another win for Woods

Tiger Woods, who has take the US Tour by storm since turning professional, captured his sixth title in less than 12 months when he fired a closing four-under-par 68 to win the Western Open at Lemont in Illinois by three shots yesterday.

The US Masters champion finished on 275, 13 under par, in his final event before heading across the Atlantic to Troon to play in this month's Open championship.

New Zealand's Frank Nobilo, who finished second, chased Woods for much of the round but a bogey five on the last hole ended his hopes of claiming the $360,000 (pounds 215,000) first prize.

A trio of Americans, Justin Leonard, Steve Lowery and Jeff Sluman, shared third place on 279.

Woods has now pocketed more than $1.7m in winnings this year, making the 21-year-old prodigy the fastest player to reach $2m in career earnings.

And with nearly half of the season to go Woods is within $20,000 of the full-season money record set last year by his fellow American Tom Lehman.
