Golf: Gallacher wanted as Ryder Cup captain
Pressure seems to be mounting on Bernard Gallacher to captain Europe's Ryder Cup team for a third time in 1995, writes Robert Green. Although Gallacher has said he would not serve again after this year's match, Ken Schofield, the executive director of the European tour, said yesterday: 'The players all want him to continue, I think. He is a magnificent man and a magnificent leader but the decision is his.' Speaking during the Volvo Masters, Schofield intimated that a decision might be announced before the end of the year. He also suggested that next time the money earned by Europeans in the three American major championships might count towards Ryder Cup points. There will be pounds 25m available on the European Tour next season, an increase of 10 per cent on this year. However Schofield warned that even though backing had been protected by the sport's worldwide growth, 'we do not have a queue of sponsors'. Three events on the 10-month schedule have no sponsor yet.
