Laura Davies, the defending champion, finished the first round of the LPGA Standard Register Ping in Phoenix with 71, three shots behind the leader Barb Mucha. Davies is trying to become the first player on the tour to win the same event in three consecutive years since Kathy Whitworth captured the Orange Blossom Classic from 1968 to 1970.
