GOLF:Luna over the moon

Santiago Luna's 10-year wait for a European Tour victory ended yesterday when he won the Madeira Island Open by four strokes. Ahead after a five-under-par 67 in the first round, he closed with a 70 to finish on the 16-under-par total of 272.

Luna's cheque for nearly £42,000 was more than half his earnings last season and it was hardly surprising that he was delighted afterwards. "Seve Ballesteros has told me many times that I have the game to win," said Luna, never previously higher than fourth.

The Frenchman, Christian Cevaer, in only his fifth tour event as a professional, made up for his £500 slow play fine in the second round by being runner-up and Essex's Paul Curry was third. But Liam White, the former Walker Cup amateur from Nottingham, who was lying second with the final round remaining, slumped to joint 18th with a 78.
