GOLF : Turner's triumph

Greg Turner let out a closely guarded secret after winning the Balearic Open by two shots in Majorca yesterday. After holding off the challenge of the Italian Ryder Cup player, Costantino Rocca, with a closing 68, Turner revealed that every time he has taken the lead into the final round of a professional tournament he has gone on to triumph.

"I've also done it in New Zealand, Singapore and Australia, but when I was asked on Saturday what my record of front-running was I didn't answer - I didn't want to tempt fate," said the 32-year-old Kiwi after collecting the £40,478 first prize and another £3,000 for his course-record 65 in the second round.

Turner's third European Tour success, achieved with a 14-under-par total of 274, was certainly the most unlikely of the three.

Turner, brother of former Test cricketer, Glenn, spent the previous four weeks fishing and reading and admitted he would have been perfectly happy to finish in the top 20 on his return. Final scores, Order of Merit,
