Golf: Westwood heads off in style
FOUR British youngsters - Lee Westwood, Andrew Coltart, Ian Garbutt and Philip Talbot - outshone their peers during the first round of the Extremadura Open at Badajoz, Spain, yesterday.
Westwood, the 20-year-old from Worksop, and Coltart, the 23-year-old former Walker Cup player from Scotland, both shot four-under-par 68s to finish a stroke behind the Spanish leader, Miguel Angel Jimenez.
Yorkshireman Garbutt and Talbot, from the Royal Mid- Surrey club, shot 69 with Garbutt holing in one at the 189-yard 16th.
It was a different story for Roger Winchester. The 26-year- old Devonian was almost in tears after having four penalty shots added to his score of 74 - because he had an extra cut- down club in his bag that he was taking home for a friend.
Winchester did not realise the club was in his bag until
after he had played his tee shot at the 11th, his second hole of the day. He was given two penalty shots at both the 10th and 11th before discarding the club.
