James, 46, was in charge of the European team during last year's Ryder Cup match against the United States in Brookline and revelations in his book about the event sparked controversy. He has withdrawn from the next five tournaments on the European Tour.

The former US PGA champion Wayne Grady made an emergency landing yesterday after the six-seater aircraft he was piloting had landing gear problems. Grady was on his way to Rockhampton to look at golf course real estate when he noticed the problem. One of the two passengers manually wound down the landing gear and the plane landed safely at Sunshine Coast airport.
