Ian Woosnam, at the centre of drama in the Open Championship last year, watched somebody else suffer at the hands of the Rules of Golf in the opening fourballs of the World Cup here in Mexico late on Thursday.
Woosnam, given a two-stroke penalty when leading at Royal Lytham after an extra club was found in his bag, expected to be congratulating France's Thomas Levet and Raphael Jacquelin on breaking 60. Then both went in the hazard – twice – at the last hole, with one of Levet's penalties coming without him touching the ball.
Hoping to play his fourth shot from a greenside bank, Levet was getting a club when his ball rolled back into the rocks. Referee John Paramor confirmed it meant another penalty and, by taking a double-bogey six, the pair lost the lead. That was taken by Mike Weir and Ian Leggatt of Canada, who shot a 13-under-par 59.
