Justin Rose returned home yesterday £150,000 richer from his first trip to America. After finishing 23rd and earning £29,000 in the US PGA, his first major in the States, the 22-year-old collected nearly £122,000 for fifth place in the NEC world championship in Seattle on Sunday.

The Australian Craig Parry took first prize, his first US Tour victory in 236 events going back to 1987, but Rose was only one shot behind Tiger Woods. It was a good week too for Lee Westwood. Joint 15th place represented his best finish of a dire season and was a timely boost with the Ryder Cup a month away. "I'll keep working and hopefully it will get better and better," he said.

Darren Clarke was one shot further back in 19th place on four under.
