Golf icon Jack Nicklaus admitted he hasn’t “had a more special day on a golf course” after watching his grandson sink a hole-in-one during the Masters par-three tournament.

Gary Nicklaus Jr, known as GT, pulled off the feat on the final hole of the par-three event after stepping away from caddying for his 78-year-old grandfather.

Nicklaus Sr, who won six green jackets during his professional career, later tweeted: “With all due respect to the Masters, allow me to put my six green jackets in the closet for a moment and say that I don’t know if I have had a more special day on a golf course.

“To have your grandson make his first hole in one on this stage ... WOW! #Family #Memoryofalifetime.”

Tom Watson won this year’s warm-up event but, as history shows, the winner of the par-three tournament has never gone on to triumph in the Masters.
