Tiger Woods confirms he will play The Open at Carnoustie this summer, hunting a fourth Claret Jug

The three-time winner will be back for more In Angus this July

Tiger Woods has confirmed that he will play The Open at Carnoustie this summer, his first tilt at the Claret Jug since missing the cut in 2015.

Woods has enjoyed something of a resurgence in form in 2018, stringing together a number of respectable finishes before tying for second at March's Valspar Championship in Florida, his best finish on Tour since August 2013. A first Major appearance since 2015 at this year's Masters saw Woods finish tied for 32nd place and break back into the world's top 100 after an extended absence.

Currently ranked 92nd, Woods is healthier than he has been in years and is putting together a run that brings back the possibility of a Ryder Cup recall for September's intercontinental clash at Le Golf National in Paris.

The road to Paris, however, likely goes through Carnoustie where Woods will look to continue his good form and add to his three previous wins in Britain's premier golf competition - 2000, 2005 and 2006.

Speaking last year, Woods made clear his desire to return to the Angus links course that he has enjoyed some testing battles with in the past.

“I’d love to play Carnoustie again as I played there in the Scottish Open in 1995 and in 1999 in The Open,” said Woods.

“I recall making just one birdie on the weekend and finished just three or four out the play-off” said Woods reflecting on The Open in 1999. “Carnoustie can be a brutal golf course and it was brutal that year,” he added. “It’s just so tough, but it’s all there in front of you. There are no tricks, there’s nothing hidden. It’s just come and get me.”

“I won two of my Open Championship’s in Scotland, and the other one in England so let’s try and add another one in there,” said Woods.
