Hockey: Five recalled for England international
Calum Giles, Great Britain's leading scorer at the Atlanta Olympics, is one of five British internationals recalled to the England squad for a one-off game against Germany in Dusseldorf on 31 May.
Giles, Simon Mason - expected to recover in time from a back operation - Jon Wyatt, Phil McGuire and Soma Singh have been brought back after England's disappointing performance in the recent Golden Jubilee tournament in Karachi, where they finished last.
The inclusion of McGuire and Singh, who made only a few appearances for Southgate during the winter, is a surprise, although Singh was probably Britain's most consistent performer in Atlanta.
With Mark Pearn unavailable, his Reading colleague Scott Ashdown has been drafted in for the first time. Cannock's Justin Pidcock, who made his debut in Karachi and was one of the few successes there, seems certain to retain his place in midfield, as Jason Laslett, is still resting from international hockey.
ENGLAND SQUAD: R Garcia (HDM), C Giles (Laren), S Mason, J Wyatt, S Ashdown (all Reading), A Humphrey, J Pidcock, B Sharpe, B Crutchley (all Cannock), B Waugh, S Singh (both Southgate), G Fordham (Hounslow), P McGuire, J Wallis (both Teddington), J Lee (Old Laughtonians), D Luckes (East Grinstead).
