HOCKEY: Garrett's gaffe

Ashley Garrett, with his penalty stroke conversions, has been stealing most of the limelight for the Midlands Under-18s in the Youth Divisional Tournament at Bristol but his miss yesterday, against North West, when he put the ball over the crossba r, mayprove particularly expensive as his side dropped their first points of the tournament in a disappointing 1-1 draw. Even so, overnight, the Midlands head both the Under-18 and Under-16 competitions.

Against the North West, after Andrew Holmes had given his side a seventh minute lead, Keith Reesby scored from a penalty corner on the interval for the final scoreline. Earlier, Midlands, with penalty-stroke goals from Stuart Williams and Garrett and a field goal from Robert Peregrine, had beaten West, for whom Mark Pearn scored from the penalty spot, 3-1 to notch up their third win of the tournament.

South East, the defending Under-18 champions, went down 1-2 to South West in a fiercely-contested game in which Jon Slay and Chris Ambridge put South West two goals ahead before a brilliant solo goal from David Matthews.

In the Women's Under-21 Territorial Tournament at Sheffield, East came from behind with a 4-0 win against North, thanks to a hat-trick from Canterbury's Melanie Clewlow. Needing to win their final game to take the title, they beat Midlands 2-0, with Suzanne Leaning scoring twice.
