Hockey: Giles tames Trojans: Havant's hit man strikes twice

CALUM GILES, with two penalty-corner conversions inside three minutes, assured Havant of a 2-0 National League win against Trojans at Southampton. Havant moved three points clear of Hounslow, who beat Bournville 3-1 away with goals from Bob Crutchley (2) and Rob Thompson.

Southgate, now out of the title chase, returned to winning form with six goals against relegated Bromley. They moved ahead of Old Loughtonians into third place, the Old Boys being held 1-1 at Stourport.

Canterbury kept alive their hopes of avoiding relegation with a 3-2 win at Slough. Chris John, who missed their two games last weekend playing in the European Indoor Club Championship, scored twice, including the winning goal from a penalty stroke. Slough had led 2-1 at the interval through goals from Ken Partington and Julian Laxon.

St Albans lost 3-0 to East Grinstead, with Richard Gibson scoring twice for the Sussex club and Mahmood Bhatti getting the other.

In the Second Division there was little joy for the bottom clubs. Doncaster lost 3-2 to Guildford and Warrington were beaten 6-1 by Brooklands, for whom the Olympic gold medal-winner Martyn Grimley scored four.

Cheltenham lost 2-0 at Barford Tigers, with Dharminder Singh scoring twice. At Gloucester, Jon Roberts was given a red card for allegedly hitting Oxford's Dan Edwards. Martin Le Huray put the students ahead, but Mark Pearn equalised from the penalty spot.

Scotland, with goals from Rhona Simpson and Sue McDonald, beat England 2-1 in the second weekend training match at Lilleshall. England's goal came from Kath Johnson.
