Hockey: High point for Ipswich
TRACY FRY'S second-minute goal set Ipswich up for the 5-0 win over Wimbledon which gave them the National League First Division title yesterday, writes Bill Colwill.
Lucy Youngs scored a second after nine minutes with Sandie Lister and Helen Bray (2) adding goals in the second half. Hightown, with goals from Tina Cullen, Nancy Stokes and Lorraine Marsden, beat Doncaster 3-0 to claim second place with Slough beating Pickwick 2-1 to finish third.
Chelmsford avoided relegation when Lynn Bollington scored the only goal of their match against Ealing. Leicester Balsam, with goals from Sue Holwell and Sarah Naylor, beat Exmouth 2-0.
In the Second Division, Trojans' 2-1 win away to Bradford Swithenbank gave them the title with Bracknell, 3-0 winners at Cambridge, finishing second.
The PizzaExpress National League Second Division automatic relegation battles were completed at the weekend with Lyons, losing 3-1 at Doncaster, and Old Kingstonians, going down 2-0 at Harleston, returning to regional leagues. Brean and Chelmsford will join the regional league winners in a play-off at Olton next month.
The members of the England team, who escaped injury when their Bombay hotel was bombed on Friday, arrive home today. The Indira Gandhi tournament has been postponed.
