Hockey: Hounslow experience double vision: Southgate's season in tatters as cup holders save face in penalty shoot-out

HOUNSLOW remain on course to repeat last season's PizzaExpress League and HA Cup double following yesterday's cup victory over Southgate and Saturday's 3-1 league win away to Firebrands.

Yesterday's defeat of Southgate, 6-5 on penalty strokes after a 2-2 draw at the end of extra time, left Southgate's season in tatters following their 3-2 defeat by Havant on Saturday after leading 2-0 at the interval. Against Hounslow, they were two goals down in eight minutes - Rob Thompson and Nick Gordon doing the damage.

Southgate fought back with goals from Bill Waugh at a penalty corner and Danny Kerry to force extra time, only to lose in sudden death with Jason Barrow saving John Shaw's attempt.

Havant's dreams of the double - following their league win against Southgate they are equal at the top with Hounslow and with a game in hand - ended at Chigwell where, in the words of their manager, Chris Pickett: 'We were completely outplayed.' Old Loughtonians go into the semi-finals following goals from Nick Thompson (2) and Paul Krishman.

In the other ties, Reading won 7-0 at Harrogate, with Chris Keevil and Paddy Osborne collecting hat-tricks, and Teddington 2-1 against Second Division Beeston.

In Saturday's league programme, Surbiton beat Cheltenham 2-1 to hold on to top spot in the Second Division, with Guildford, 4-2 winners at Isca, keeping up the pressure one point behind.

There were no surprises in the women's fourth-round cup games with the holders, Balsam Leicester, winning 2-0 at Wimbledon and Ipswich, who took over from Leicester at the top of the Premier Division on Saturday, winning 4-1 at North Staffordshire.
