Phil Appleyard OBE, one of the game's key figures, died on Saturday in hospital near his home in Somerset. He was 74.
His period as chairman of the 1986 World Cup organising committee and his presidency of the Hockey Association from 1985-1995 were distinguished by his great commercial and management skills.
In 1988 he introduced the National League. He also began the long road to merging with the Women's Hockey Association and helped establish the National Stadium at Milton Keynes.
