Hockey: Slough savour cup win
Hightown. . . . . . . 1
Slough. . . . . . . . 1
(Slough win 4-2 on penalties)
SLOUGH added the AEWHA Cup to their National Indoor title when they beat Hightown on penalty strokes after a stalemate at Milton Keynes on Saturday, writes Bill Colwill. For Slough it was sweet revenge for their defeat by Hightown in the 1992 final, also after a shoot-out. But for Hightown it was a bitter pill as they were beaten in the Indoor final by Slough, again after strokes, and are now out of European competition next season.
Slough, after failing to go ahead after 26 minutes from three penalty corners within two minutes, took the lead two minutes before the interval when Sue Chandler, moved forward from her sweeper role, slotted in a cross from Sam Wright after good approach work by Kate White.
Hightown, with Chris Cook and Fiona Lee running the midfield and their captain Lorraine Marsden recovering from an injury shortly after the interval, were level 11 minutes into the second-half. Marsden herself showed the way with a well struck penalty corner. Chances were squandered at both ends before the penalty shoot-out broke the deadlock.
