Klinsmann nets £4.6m from Bayern

When Jrgen Klinsmann announced he was leaving Tottenham Hotspur, he said he was not joining Bayern Munich for the money. If that had been his driving force, he would have taken up an offer from Italy, he said.

Yesterday, when he signed for the German club, he reiterated that there was a powerful football reason for his decision. "It is a special incentive for me to go after a title," the 30-year-old striker said. "I have never been champion or cup winner."

Not that the German captain will exactly go short of the odd deutschmark while he is trying to fill that gap in his list of honours. His three- year Bayern contract, which takes effect on 1 July, will bring him £1.1m a year, as much as Bayern's leading earner, Lothar Matthus. He will also pick up a one-off payment of £1.3m from Bayern, the same sum that they will pay Tottenham as a transfer fee.

"Klinsmann has a contract that fits in wonderfully with our salary landscape," said Bayern's general manager, Uli Hoeness - an artistic reference that will make most of the players Klinsmann leaves behind feel like a dot on the flat lands of Lincolnshire.

Klinsmann will return to London to collect his Footballer of the Year award tomorrow.
