Kluivert's late strike sinks Scotland

Scotland failed by the narrowest of margins to qualify for the last eight of Euro 96 last night. Craig Brown's team beat Swit- zerland 1-0 at Villa Park and would have qualified at the expense of the Netherlands had Patrick Kluivert not pulled a late goal back for the Dutch against England at Wembley.

The Scots' result meant that they finished on the same points total and with the same goal difference as the Dutch, who progressed because they scored more goals in their games. Ally McCoist was Scotland's scorer.
