Leicester City last night enjoyed the sweetest of first victories under Martin O'Neill as they battled to a 3-2 win at Wolves, who are managed by their former manager, Mark McGhee.

Leicester's triumph ended a barren nine-match run of seven draws and two defeats since O'Neill was appointed to succeed McGhee, who controversially defected to Molineux in December.

Wolves had not lost for seven League games and looked set for another win when Steve Bull fired them in front after a mistake by the Leicester goalkeeper, Kevin Poole, but Mike Stowell, the Wolves keeper, returned the favour with an error which led to Iwan Roberts' equaliser. Brian Law headed his first goal for Wolves to restore their lead before the break, but Leicester took charge in the second half and two goals from the teenager, Emile Heskey, earned maximum points.

"I'm not going to lose a minute's sleep over it," McGhee said. "If it stops all the problems there have been over my leaving Leicester, it is a cost I am prepared to pay."

Luton Town moved a step closer to First Division survival with a 1-1 draw at the leaders, Derby County, Dwight Marshall cancelling out Darryl Powell's strike for the Rams.
