Sir : As a golfing nutcase, I think one particular point is worthy of mention about the Ryder Cup, which provides the "icing on the icing" so to speak.

I know the expenses are very generous and the endorsements that follow very lucrative but in what other sport are you able to gather together 24 world-class sportsmen (and two captains) and put on the sort of show that we have just been privileged to watch and not have to pay the players to play.

Players like Faldo, Ballesteros, Pavin and Couples are there just because they want to be. The quality of play, honesty, friendship and depth of gut feeling extends beyond comprehension.
