Manager Kirkwood

Dundee United last night appointed their former player and coach Billy Kirkwood as manager. Kirkwood replaces the Yugoslav Ivan Golac, who departed two weeks ago.

Kirkwood, who for the past two seasons has been in charge of the Rangers reserve side, will retain Gordon Wallace, Golac's right-hand man, as his assistant.

The Football Association will resist pressure to name more young players who have been discovered using "social" drugs like marijuana but they will not offer anonymity for any player caught using a performance- enhancing substance.

They reluctantly confirmed that the Charlton teenagers Dean Chandler and Lee Bowyer as the latest players detected by random tests during training. Both were found to have traces of marijuana in their blood.
