Modahl sues BAF for pounds 480,000

Diane Modahl is suing the British Athletic Federation for pounds 480,000 compensation over her drugs case, the federation's annual meeting was told in Birmingham. The figure was disclosed by treasurer John Lister, who said that pounds 195,000 had already been spent on the case.

Modahl was banned for four years by a BAF disciplinary hearing after testing positive in Lisbon, then cleared by an appeals panel. She is claiming for legal and scientific fees and loss of earnings while suspended. Next weekend the International Amateur Athletic Federation decides whether to accept the panel's verdict or refer the case to arbitration.

Modahl, who returned to championship racing for the first time in 18 months on Saturday, will definitely take part in the British Olympic trials - assuming the international authorities uphold the lifting of her ban.

Modahl, whose last championship racing was at the 1994 Commonwealth Games, from which she was sent home in traumatic circumstances, helped Sale Harriers win the national cross-country relay title in freezing conditions at Berry Hill Park, Mansfield, completing her leg of 3,000 metres in 11min 04sec.

Her husband and coach, Vicente, confirmed she would be seeking an Olympic place this year, although he accepted it would be difficult to come to terms with running in trials organised by the BAF.

Geoff Parsons' attempt to become treasurer of the BAF following Lister's resignation has failed. The 31-year-old high jumper was beaten by the Southern Counties treasurer, Martin Evanson, by a vote of 550-356.
