Germany will continue to host two Formula One grands prix each year until 2001. Hockenheim currently hosts the German Grand Prix, with Nurburgring staging for the first time this year the Luxembourg Grand Prix, previously called the European Grand Prix.

Britain's Mark Blundell held off a closing Alex Zanardi of Italy to win his second career CART race, the Molson Indy at Exhibition Place in Toronto. The two former Formula One drivers were separated by 69-hundredths of a second at the end of the race as Zanardi chipped away at a two-second lead over the final 10 laps.
