EMERSON FITTIPALDI has not given up hope of catching his team-mate, Al Unser Jnr, the runaway leader in what is now a two-man contest for the IndyCar title. 'Al has done a fantastic job and he deserves to win the championship, but I'm not going to concede to him until it's impossible for me to win the championship,' the Brazilian driver said.

Unser has won three successive races and eight of the 13 IndyCar events so far this season and he leads Fittipaldi 193-137 in the points race with only 66 points available in the season's final three events, the first of which being tomorrow's Road America 200 in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin.

Mercedes-Benz, whose Ilmor Engineering-developed engines dominated this year's Indianapolis 500, will power Bobby Rahal's IndyCar team next season. Rahal will test the power plants with a Lola chassis in December.
