NIGEL MANSELL, driving a Lola-Ford, yesterday had to settle for the fifth fastest time in unofficial practice for Sunday's 200-mile IndyCar race on the one-mile oval in Nazareth, Pennsylvania.
'The car wasn't very good today,' Mansell said. 'I scared myself a few times. The back end wanted to come around going into turn one and at the exit of turn two. And I had a big understeer in three and four. So, the boys will work on it tonight, and hopefully, the car will be better tomorrow.'
Canada's Paul Tracy was quickest in a Penske-Ilmor at an unofficial track record speed of 183.620mph. Emerson Fittipaldi, of Brazil, and the Americans Robby Gordon and Mario Andretti, racing on his home circuit, also unofficially beat the track record.
Official, single-car qualifying will take place today.
