MICHAEL DOOHAN, of Australia, won his first race since badly breaking his leg in the Dutch Grand Prix last year when he took his Honda past the American Kevin Schwantz on the final lap of the San Marino 500cc Grand Prix at Mugello, Italy, yesterday. Schwantz slowed with a mechanical problem on his Suzuki and finished second but maintained his lead in the world championship standings.

Wayne Rainey, of the United States, the reigning world champion, finished third on a Yamaha to stay at second place in the standings, 23 points behind Schwantz and 49 ahead of Doohan. Britain's Niall Mackenzie was eighth on a Yamaha and is seventh in the championship.

Schwantz, who diced with Doohan for the lead throughout, said: 'The bike started to vibrate very badly on the final lap. I just eased back because I didn't want anything silly to happen. I'd rather settle for second-place points than no points at all.'

The next race, the 10th of 13 in the championship, will be the British Grand Prix at Donington on 1 August.
