After an unprecedented finale to a World Cup race, Johan Museeuw, Belgium's "king of the classics", won the centenary Paris-Roubaix race yesterday, with the Italians Gianluca Bortolami and Andrea Tafi completing a one- two-three for their Mapei team.

They broke away about 75 kilometres from the end of the 263.5km course over the cobblestones and narrow lanes of northern France, the race nicknamed the "Hell of the North".

The three started arguing before riding into the Roubaix velodrome together, raising their arms in triumph and not trying to sprint, with Museeuw allowed to lead over the finish line. "It was the team boss who decided I would win at the end," Museeuw said. "It's an incredible feeling."
