Shea Neary, of Liverpool, became Britain's newest world boxing champion by taking the vacant World Union title with a unanimous points victory over the American Darryl Tyson at Everton Park Sports Centre. It was the first WBU fight to be staged in Britain, and the 28-year-old Neary gave the organisation a splendid launch, building up a massive early lead and holding on to win by the wide margin of 119-110 on two cards and 118-110 on the third.
