Newcastle, the Premiership leaders, yesterday added another sporting string to their bow. The football giants, under the stewardship of the chairman, Sir John Hall, have taken over Newcastle Gosforth rugby club. From next season the club will known as Newcastle.

Conor O'Shea, the Ireland full-back, who has joined London Irish from Landsdowne, will make his Courage League debut alongside fellow international, Gary Halpin, in Saturday's Second Division match against Northampton at Sunbury.
