Cam Newton car crash: Carolina Panthers quarterback injured after accident

Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton was injured in a two car crash on Tuesday afternoon in Charlotte, North Carolina.

The NFL player was taken to hospital with minor back fractures, officials said. The crash took place not far from the team's Bank of America Stadium.

According to Panthers spokesman Charlie Dayton, Newton suffered two transverse process fractures in his lower back but avoided any other internal injuries. Newton remained in hospital overnight for observation and is not expected to undergo an operation.

However, it is unclear whether he will return to action for the Panthers this weekend against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Police said they are now investigating the cause of the crash that also sent the driver of the other vehicle to hospital.

Authorities said the accident took place over Interstate 277 just after midday on Tuesday. Witnesses said Newton's truck rolled over numerous times and video of the aftermath showed the roof of Newton's vehicle had caved in.

Newton, 25, has thrown almost 3,00 yards, run more than 400 yards, accounted for 19 touchdowns and taken 11 interceptions this season.

He has started every game for the Panthers since entering the league in 2011.
