Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott has said he will donate $1 million to “improve police training and address systemic racism” in the United States through education and advocacy.

The NFL star made the pledge on Wednesday as protests continued over the death of George Floyd, an unarmed black man who died after a white police officer knelt on his neck for nearly nine minutes in Minneapolis on 25 May.

“As a black, multiracial American, I am disgusted and unsettled,” Prescott wrote on Instagram.

“As our communities take action, protesting and fighting for the justice of George Floyd and every black life, I am with you.

“I plan to take action and pledge $1,000,000 to improve our police training and address systematic racism through education and advocacy in our country.”

Floyd’s death has triggered a wave of outrage and demonstrations in the US and around the world, and four Minneapolis police officers are facing charges following the incident.

“To the men and women that police our streets, I have the utmost respect for those of you with a passion for protecting and serving our communities,” Prescott continued.

“When you chose to wear the badge of a police officer, you pledged to PROTECT life and property through the enforcement of our laws and regulations.

“How can you claim to uphold the law when those within your own ranks don’t abide by it? You need to hold your own accountable!

“As long as cops continue to profile blacks as a threat, cops will continue to be perceived as untrustworthy! You have to change yourself before you can ask anyone else to change!”

Numerous athletes have spoken out since Floyd’s death, including Chicago Bulls legend Michael Jordan and professional golfer Tiger Woods.

Meanwhile, former boxer Floyd Mayweather offered to cover Floyd’s funeral costs.
