The United States, the reigning Fed Cup champions, will have to beat Japan in a play-off this summer to remain in the top flight of the women's team event. A depleted US team lost to the Netherlands in the opening round early this month and following yesterday's draw in Luxembourg they will be relegated to Group II unless they beat Japan in the play- off round from 12 to 13 July. The United States have home advantage.
