Alex Ferguson, manager of Manchester United, has agreed to send a full-strength team to Maine Road to play Manchester City on Sunday 5 October for the testimonial of Paul Lake, the former Manchester City midfielder whose career was ended early by injury.

McCarthy, once given a free transfer by Hartlepool, cost Vale pounds 450,000 from York two years ago. Another Birmingham target, the Wales midfielder John Robinson, is staying with Charlton after Trevor Francis' pounds 1m bid was rejected.
