Australia made it 11 wins from 11 games under Terry Venables to advance to the final qualifying phase for next year's World Cup finals. The former QPR midfielder Ned Zelic, now with Auxerre, scored the opening goal in Sydney when he hit a 25-yard volley after six minutes. And Australia completed a 5-0 aggregate win when Graham Arnold, the 33-year-old Hiroshima Sanfrecce striker, lobbed Kiwi keeper Jason Batty in the 54th minute. Australia will now play the fourth-placed Asian team in the final regional eliminator in November.

Celtic's players gave their new coach, Wim Jansen, a welcome to the club with 21 goals against a Dutch amateur side last night. The Scots overwhelmed FC Beatrix in a friendly at the start of their three-match tour of the Netherlands, despite being without foreign stars Paolo Di Canio and Jorge Cadete. Celtic won 21-0, Tommy Johnson scoring six and Alan Stubbs, playing in midfield, hitting a hat-trick. Substitute John-Paul McBride also claimed a hat-trick, with Simon Donnelly and David Hannah grabbing two apiece. Di Canio has refused to go on the tour, claiming he needs to do work on his fitness. Meanwhile Cadete has not returned from Portugal, insisting he has hepatitis A - but Celtic have yet to see sight of a doctor's certificate confirming his condition.
