Sammy McIlroy has been rewarded for guiding Macclesfield into the Football League with a two-year extension to his contract. The former Manchester United and Northern Ireland midfielder managed the club to the Conference championship this season.

Roy Hodgson, the new Blackburn manager, has made his first addition to the Ewood Park backroom staff by recruiting Mick Brown as chief scout. Brown, best known for his time as assistant manager to Ron Atkinson at Manchester United, leaves the same post at Coventry to join Rovers.

Peter Schmeichel will captain Denmark in their World Cup European group one qualifier against Bosnia in Copenhagen on 8 June. He takes over the captaincy from midfielder Michael Laudrup, who sustained a knee injury in April.
