The former England striker Peter Davenport has left the GM Vauxhall Conference club Southport after a spell as caretaker player-manager. Southport have appointed Ronnie Moore, previously in charge of Tranmere, as their full-time manager.

France will inaugurate the new national stadium being built in Paris for the 1998 World Cup finals with a friendly against Spain next January, six months before the tournament begins.

Russia plans to reduce its Premier League from 18 to 16 teams for the 1998 season to help the national squad prepare for the next World Cup.
