Jana Novotna, of the Czech Republic, apologised for comments she had made about Jennifer Capriati after beating the American in the final of the Ameritech Cup in Chicago. "I made some negative or critical comments about Jennifer's comeback," Novotna admitted. Capriati, who beat Monica Seles in the semi-finals, was appearing in her first final since the Canadian Open in 1993. Seles' defeat demoted her to joint No 2 in the world with Arantxa Sanchez Vicario, the first time since her comeback 14 months ago that Seles has not been ranked joint No 1 with Steffi Graf.
