The Tottenham striker Gerard McMahon has been given a trial with the Italian Serie A club, Udinese. The Northern Ireland international, who has also had a trial with the German side VfB Stuttgart, has been urged to seek regular first-team football by the Northern Ireland manager Bryan Hamilton.

Wolves are to appeal against the decision of a Football League commission which ordered them to pay Leicester City damages of pounds 250,000 over the transfer of the goalkeeper, Zeljko Kalac.

Bryan Robson and Graeme Souness have asked for personal hearings of their disrepute charges. Both managers were reported by the Premiership referee, Mike Riley, for comments allegedly made to him after matches last month.

Preston have signed the Middlesbrough striker Chris Freestone on loan after Steve Wilkinson was ruled out for six weeks after undergoing surgery on his knee.
